How to Help Your Keratin Treatment Last

You've invested hard-earned cash on an expensive Keratin treatment, so take steps to make it last.

According to stylists, keratin bonds to the hair making it smooth, but that coating will eventually wear off.

Here are three steps you should take to help your treatment last longer.

Choose your shampoo and conditioner carefully.

Sodium laureth sulfate is an agent that helps shampoo to cleanse hair. However, if you lather up with shampoos that contain sulfates, the keratin will be stripped from your hair more quickly.

After a keratin treatment, stylists recommend opting for sulfate-free shampoos. My favorite is Acure ultra-hydrating shampoo and conditioner.

Wash less frequently.

Since washing causes friction, wash less often to protect your treatment. Use a shower cap to keep your hair dry. This one really keeps the moisture off and is large enough to hold long hair.

Between washes, use a dry shampoo to keep your hair looking fresh. Since some dry shampoo can make dark hair dull, I prefer the slight color in Batiste dry shampoo.

Change your pillow case.

You spend a third of your life in bed, so be mindful about what is rubbing against your head. The friction of your pillow will eventually wear down your expensive keratin treatment.

A silk or satin pillowcase will reduce the amount of friction between your hair and your pillow, leading to less breakage. Plus, it won't dehydrate your hair like traditional pillow cases can, which will keep your hair shiny longer.
